We entered looking for something different and the experience we received was certainly different from any I've had before. A wait of over 40 minutes for a Thali and a Mezze was disappointing enough. A neighboring table of two ordered at the same time and were much more vocal about their displeasure. They were given the excuse that, there's only room for 1 person in the kitchen." Which begs the question why they have more than one table

The owners dog keeps barking at me and some of the other customers and the staff do nothing about it. Makes me feel very uncomfortable and unwelcome.

Sooo so happy we found this place! We went back the day after for food again and we would continue to if we weren’t going back home! On our visits to devon trying to find delicious vegan food is always a challenge however roots surpassed our expectations and then some! The burrito bowls and burritos are to die for! Full of flavour! Loads for your money great value and helpful friendly staff! Dog friendly and easy to find! If you’re a vegan/veggie looking for yummy fresh food this is definitely the place to visit! Thank you!

Nice atomsphere and very cosy. Plants everywhere and interesting decor. Dogs are welcome here and they have free treats to give them too!!HOWEVER...The food is accommodating and great variety for vegan, vegetarian and gluten free but disappointing in hygiene quality. 3 long hairs were found in one meal and a shorter hair in another.**Facilities: No Toilet Inside The Cafe Itself But Down An Alley Instead**Summary For Those Who Don't Like To Read:✓ Dog Friendly✓ Vegan, Vegetarian, Gluten Free✓ Nice And Cosy Atmosphere× Poor Food Hygiene× Not Wheelchair Friendly× Not Pushchair / Pram Friendly

Had a birthday celebration here. Really responsive to messages. Food was absolutely excellent. All six of us were delighted with the quality of food and the quality of service. Really fresh ingredients. Very friendly staff. Made my day (it was my birthday).

Very disappointing. We entered Saturday at 1.30pm when the cafe was empty and ordered a thali and a mezze, along with two smoothies and some tap water. Took about 10 minutes for the drinks to appear, and when they did, the water glasses were filthy. I mean, not just a bit of water pest and finger marks, but full on grime and bits of food stuck on there. It took 55 minutes (!) for our food to arrive. Several other people had come in after us and ordered, been served, eaten and even left by this time. Another couple, who came in just after us, were also waiting this long for their food (also a mezze but with a burger), and were a lot more vocal about how unsatisfactory they felt that the wait was. They got served just a few minutes before we did and were told the delay was due to only one person on duty in the kitchen (though how microwaving a few curries and heating some falafel to go with the cold salad and pickles can possibly take so long is beyond anyone's guess really). The 'chef' came out to check with the other table and ask whether they liked the food. They said it was ok and were offered a cake for free to make up for the disappointing experience. No one came to speak to us or to apologise for the fact that we had waited even longer. I have to be honest, for me to have much positive to say at this point, the food would have had to have been truly delicious. It wasn't. As a whole, it was average at best. The falafels were pretty tasty and the smoothies were nice too. But the rest was mediocre, with the exception of the pita which was rock hard and nothing short of appalling. The whole experience cost us just shy of £40. If the food had taken 20 minutes and was of a similar quality, I'd probably have been reasonably happy to pay about £15. In short, there only thing about Roots that I can recommend is that you avoid eating there.Edit: the restaurant responded to my feedback insinuating that my son crying was the reason for my lacklustre experience. It is completely true that a crying child is stressful, especially when this is due to hunger, which was the entire reason why we had entered the premises in the first place. Funnily the owner failed to remark how my child only started becoming fussy after 20 minutes (which honestly should have been ample time for food to arrive) and that he stopped once food was finally delivered and he was being fed ... Clearly they're as good at receiving fair feedback as they are at delivering food within a reasonable timeframe.
